'Tis the season to be jolly and to decorate your pods if you're in our Pembroke office obviously as these photos show.

Brownbook meets Blog Legend

No not me sadly, but Robert Scoble, who is on of the 'Top 10 Bloggers in the World'.

Dave and Mark from Brownbook recently picked him up from Heathrow and gave him a lift to London, repaying him for the favour when he had done a similar thing for them in San Fransisco two years ago.

They wanted to talk to him about Brownbook, but he went one step further and suggested that he should do a video interview instead.

Here's some links to the same video clip:

Binny meets Boorman; Rob meets babes!

Binny and Rob recently attended the Carole Nash NEC Bike Show, on a mission to source new clients and contacts.

Rob reports: "Binny was mixing with the celebrities the Hairy Bikers and Charlie Boorman, she also had time to try a few of the new bikes on show.

"Rob H's concentration was mostly focused on building new relationships, it was job and someone had to do it but don’t tell the Wife!" (Ed. OK Rob your secret is safe with us...and the billions of other people who use the Internet!)

Who's nicked the fairy?

This was sent in from Kerry Rolls in the Chichester boats office. Looks like someone has an issue with their choice of decoration on top of their tree...
From: Kelly Barnes Sent: 03 December 2008 09:21To: Boatshop24; Stephen Sumner Subject: Where's our fairy?

Dear All,

It is a grave day indeed when our tree fairy is kidnapped and held for ransom. I discovered the attached note when I was putting a freshly cleaned and dried teaspoon back into the cutlery drawer this morning.

I would like to make clear that we do not respond to this kind of blackmail and we will not be depositing any sort of ransom payment. However we would like to appeal to the kidnapper(s) to return her safe and sound back to the tree. If he/she/they do this then we will not look back through our CCTV footage of the office and will not punish said kidnapper(s).

Kind regards,
Big Brother

And here's the ransom note...

Pembroke's display team recently held a 'Santa Battle' sales day for the Pembroke edition.

‘Horses for sale’ is UK’s most popular search term

Here's a press release we have just circulated for Horsemart.co.uk, showing how well it is performing as a classified site and also how it is benefiting from the popularity of the searhc term 'horses for sale'...

Hitwise, an Experian company, has revealed that ‘horses for sale’ is the most popular search term containing the phrase ‘for sale’ in the UK.

Their survey results, released last week, show that the search term increased by 5% over the last 12 months, the best performing ‘for sale’ term across all classified sites.

Sarah Wood, business manager for Horsemart says: “This is really encouraging news and demonstrates that despite the current credit crunch, finding a new horse is still a high priority for horsey folk.”

“We currently have 445,996 visitors per month, which has increased over the last year, helping to prove the popularity of our site for people looking to find a horse for sale.”

Horsemart currently ranks at number six in the Hitwise list of Top 10 classified websites ranked by market share of UK Internet visits (September 2008). No other classified equestrian websites appear within this list.

Sarah added: “This ranking is fantastic news and helps show our customers that by working with Horsemart they are not only targeting the right sort of people, but are reaching the largest equestrian audience in the UK”.

Hundreds of spectators turned up too to witness the likes of Captain America, Batman and a man dressed as a bride!

You can read the full report here and view a film of the day here.

As well as having lots of fun we also raised over £500 for the local lifeboats station.

Run Forest, run!

Jason Knight from IRT is running in the Great South Run on Sunday 26th October.

It's a ten mile run round Portsmouth and he's running on behalf of the Stroke Foundation. If you would like to sponsor him then please mail him or call him on x7571.

NKOTB - update

Apologies to Faye, who would like me to point out that she does actually do something, I just missed out her job title which is 'Online Retail Marketing Executive'.

Have you seen this man (on TV)?

You may recall that last year I mentioned Gavin Davies (former Friday-Ad Pembroke employee) was filming for ITV reality show Natural Born Sellers.

This has now hit our screens and two episodes in (at time of writing) Gavin is still in the competition and in with a shout of winning the big cash prize.

Despite ending up in the bottom two reps, Gavin is holding his against the other sales people so it will be interesting to see how he fares in the end.

For those of you who didn't have the pleasure of meeting Gavin here's his biog courtesy of ITV (as is the photo above):

Name: Gavin
Age:32
Occupation: Team Sales Manager
Employment History: Gavin started out in the supermarket aisles before he found his niche in advertising sales. Quickly rising through the ranks he was promoted to Team manager for ‘naturally excelling in sales’. “I don’t do anything that benefits humanity” he says.

Profile:After a slow start on the employment ladder, Gavin admits to really enjoys the challenge of sales. He’s happy go lucky, and says he ‘doesn’t take life seriously and hates people that do or moan a lot’. Money is not an obvious motivation but the fun and challenge of earning it. Gavin believes that his key will be that his opponents won’t see him as a threat and he will be able to sideswipe them to win it all.

Hobbies: Gavin is an avid reader, has an insatiable passion for film, loves listen to music and watching dramas and comedy on TV. He is a part time investigator of the paranormal and enjoys combining camping trips with local ghost “hunts”.

Natural Born Sellers is on ITV1 on Thursdays @ 9pm.

There's a link here to more info and you can watch the previous episodes again, but you'll need to do this at home as our Firewall blocks it!

Watch out London, here we come...

We are proud to announce the launch of Londonlist.co.uk a new, free classified advertising site for the London market.

Londonlist.co.uk is an exciting addition to the Friday Holdings portfolio of vertical websites.

It’s totally free to place picture or video ads so please pass this on to anyone you know who lives, or commutes to London.

To find out more contact Bryn Mabey.

Michael Owen beaten by a girl (as was Gavin too)

Pictured here is Laura Mercer, proudly displaying the trophy she won recently when she and Kelly Smith challenged Michael Owen and Gavin Morris to a friendly game of ten-pin bowling.

Michael and Gavin were down at Sayers when Laura invited them out to Eastbourne, where Michael couldn't resist trying to prove his skills in the lanes...

Laura says: "Michael had a £5 bet that he would beat me at bowling. Always up for the challenge, although knowing I wasn’t great at bowling, I accepted.

"I then beat him! He was beaten by a girl!

"Gavin and Kelly were too far behind to be contenders for 1st or 2nd, but battled it out for 3rd place with Kelly winning 3rd place."

Michael and Gavin have now returned to Pembroke where hopefully their colleagues have been giving them plenty of stick...if not then feel free to do so now!

New kids on the block

Trade It; load of hot air?

News from Bristol, where the Trade It team have been kept busy by a balloon fiesta.
If you’re a little confused as to what goes on at a balloon fiesta, Jon Chamberlain has kindly provided us with some details. The Bristol International Balloon Fiesta is a massive event in the South West, attracting 500,000 people across four days, and is held at the start of August each year.

A celebration of all things ballooning (as you might suspect), the Trade It promotions team managed to hand out a hefty 7000 goody bags at the event, as well as 3000 balloons, even with the ever-reliable British summer putting a dampener on proceedings. Despite the mudbath, the event proved to be a great success, and was topped off by a dazzling performance from the Red Arrows.

Thanks to Mitch Ackerman, Paul Scrivens, Laura Kite and Lizzi Wood for helping out at the fiesta alongside the promotions team of Jon Chamberlain, Neil Ackerman, Carly Modessa, Pete Ward and Sarah Dunn.

There's a new vegetable in Business Services...

Only joking, sort of! However, there is a strange new arrival in Business Services in the shape of Rose's amazing giant courgette! This really has to be seen to be believed. Measuring a staggering 24" long and 6" wide, the courgette took only three weeks to reach its supersized level. Rose is keeping quiet however, on whether any unorthodox techniques were used to help the monster courgette to grow (aside from a little help from last year's tomato compost).

I sense a FAD vegetable growing contest is on the cards, so if you have terrifying tomatoes, colossal carrots or massive melons (careful..) just let me know!

The courgette's been on display all day, so if you've got a spare moment, go and check it out...

Thursday 7 August 2008

Some new (and not so new) faces!

This week has seen the return of an old face in Chris Wilson, who returns to the FAD fold after 18 months away. Chris was here for 9 years before leaving in 2006. Good to have you back!

And it's also a belated welcome to Mark Charlesworth, who took up the role of IT Manager at the end of June. Mark previously worked at Sony's Computer Entertainment Europe HQ in London. It seems our resident blogger's been a little slow on the uptake in spreading that news, sorry Mark...

While Mr Somerville's off en vacances in France, I'll be taking his role as the Oracle (I'm not worthy), so if you have any news or information that you'd like to share with everyone, then feel free to drop me an email.

Chip.

New member for Alan's pit crew

More news from Alan Stuart as Jo Wood (pictured below, second from the right) has recently joined the Spidersnet team. she was previously working for Johnson Press in their motors department, but has seen the error of her ways and joined us. Prior to that she was selling cars.

And also Alan will be racing in the Friday-Ad/Spidersnet liveried BMW at Silverstone on September 19th.

He will be supporting the Brit Car 24hr race in the Toyo Production Saloon race. This will be the biggest event of the year on the full GP circuit in a 45 minute race. Car and driver should be well up for a good result and you can check out more info here.

Motor shows success

Our Friday-Ad and Spidersnet motors teams recently partnered up with Motorshow Events to help stage the Eastbourne Motor Show (12 and 14 July) and Tunbridge Wells Motor Show (27 and 29 July).

Both shows were a huge success (over 40,000 alone at Eastbourne), with excellent feedback from both visitors and exhibitors alike. Thousands of people attended the shows and the sun even managed to shine a bit too.

The big red Friday-Ad bus was the backdrop to our stand at the events, with the centrepiece being the 'win a car' competition we ran. At Eastbourne the car was a brand new Lotus Elise S worth £25,000 was the prize for anyone who managed to roll 7 sixes in one throw, Dream Machines the Lotus dealers for the Heathfield area were the suppliers and sponsors of this very popular competition.

This caused a real sensation with a long cue all day for both days of punters trying their hand at winning the prize. Unfortunately no one did win the full size car but one lucky winner did get a model of the Lotus Elise.

At Tunbridge Wells the car was a Ford Focus, donated by Lifestyle Ford. Again there was no lucky winner, but from both shows a total of £1277 was raised in total from both shows It was split between BEN (all the money raised at Eastbourne £920) & Hospice in the Weald ( Tunbridge Wells local hospice).

This year's guest compere was Mike Brewer (Driven, Wheeler Dealers, Deals on Wheels and Pulling Power) who did a fantastic job. Despite the searing heat he was knowledgeable and amused everyone with his witty banter and dodgy competitions such as the 'Topless challenge'.

For more photos of the events have a look here for Eastbourne and here for Tunbridge Wells.

Congratulations to Lisa and Mitch from Trade-It who on Saturday passed their first belt in freestyle Kickboxing.

After an intense 90 minutes of work-out and sparring they were awarded with their new yellow belts.

Lisa said that she thought they both look a state in this picture, but I won't comment as they'll kick my a**e!

GONEBoarding

We recently completed another boardsports website acquisition, this time for GONEboarding.co.uk, the UK's number 1 site for the snowboarding community.

GONEboarding was created by our very own Marcus Starnes, who has grown the site into one that is well used and respected by UK snowboarders.

Marcus is now running GONEboarding on a full-time basis here at Sayers (when he's not on the slopes that is!).

Here's a bit of background info:

Launched in 2001, GONEboarding.co.uk was developed by snowboarders, for snowboarders and quickly became the UK's largest independent online snowboarding community.

The site generates an average of 291,933 page impressions per month, 51,442 visits per month and 22,920 unique visitors (Jan – Jun 08).

Every day thousands of visitors log on to join in the snowboarding related discussions, write reviews, upload photos and check out what the rest of the GONEboarding community has submitted.

GONEboarding has four main areas for visitors to browse and members to get involved in:

Forum
Review
Gallery
Events Diary

The site is a great addition to our group portfolio and fits in well with the other sporting 'community' sites of Natives and A1Surf.

For more information contact Marcus or visit GONEboarding.

Sales Rule No 1 - Do your research first...

As those of you who work in our sales teams know, before you pick up the phone to speak to someone it's often worth doing a little bit of research first...well at least to check whether they are owned by one of your competitors!

Kate Kidger received the email below in response to the promotional ads she is running for ClickPets in the Friday-Ad at the moment (name has been removed to protect the innocent sales rep!)...

Dear Kate,
I note that you have an advert in the cuurent issue of the Friday Ad., and would like to make you aware that you could place a full colour ad., same size in The Argus, Friday & Saturday, on the internet for one week at a cost of £10 inclusive of vat.
If you are at all interested please call me on 01273 544300 or email

The Battle of Pembroke

The New Business team in Pembroke recently held a 'Battle Incentive Day'. This seems to have been a great excuse for people to dress up in camo gear and play with toy guns, but they did generate a very respectable £5.5k to add to the Homes & Gardens supplement war chest.

Pictured below is the victorious 'Major-General Morris', complete with victory cigar, with one of his troops....

And a photo of Field Marshall Gould, who loves any excuse to dress up!

Calling all musos...get your music on our video reviews

A request in from Boyd at UKBike.com who is after any staff with musical talents to contact him as he's after bands to volunteer their music to be the soundtrack for one of his video reviews.

Two current reviews already have music from talented staff. One is for a Buell XB1200SS and features Ger (from our design department) and his band Dogzuki (buy their debut album here).

The other is for a Harley Davidson FLSTF 'Fatboy' and features the talents of Stephen Burke (from marketing) with his band School for Scoundrels.

So if you're a tub thumper or plank spanker then drop Boyd an email or call him on extension 7836.

Trade-It do the Cotswold Show

A report from Jon Chamberlain about Trade-It's attendance at the Cotswold Show...

The Trade-It promotions team recently attended the Cotswold Show in Cirencester Park on 5th and 6th July. The excellent, hard-working team gave away thousands of extra copies of Trade-It, Trade-It Local and the latest Bike-It magazine, despite some very inclement weather on the Sunday morning!

As part of a deal brokered by Jon Chamberlain, Trade-It also produced the show programme for the second year running, which this year brought in over £5,500 of extra revenue. All in all an excellent weekend for Trade-It!

The deal also included free stand space adjacent to the main arena, enabling the staff to get an excellent view of the monster trucks and dog agility displays!

The team present at the show were Jon Chamberlain, Ruth Pitman, Neil Ackerman, Pete Ward and Carly Modessa. The Trade-It Business Sales team, in particular Caroline Lewton, brought in the revenue for the programme, which was printed by Uckfield Press.

Hey hey we're the monkeys

Marion found some new Friday-Ad readers on her recent trip to our Gibraltar office, who seem to go 'ape' for the latest issue.
Perhaps his mate is thinking "why is he reading it upside down?"

Surf's up with latest acquisition

Friday Holdings recently acquired A1Surf.com, one of the UK's leading websites for the surfing community.

The site is packed full with content including news, video clips, a forum, surf forecasts, daily surf reports.

And if you're looking for a present for the surfer in your life (that will be me or Dai then!) then have a look at the online surf shop.

Job boards set new records

Last month saw the job boards division of Friday Holdings raise the bar yet again, with both the IRT and Simply teams having record months.

Despite a slow start, both teams put in big performances to ensure that they not only hit their targets, but did so comprehensively.

Ian Partington says: "The job board business generated £241,841 of revenue, an impressive £12,841 ahead of what was already a stretching target.

"This level of performance confirms to me that we now have a sales team that can meet and beat the challenges ahead.

"With 4 new people starting with us this week I am sure that the excellent progression we have made this year will continue at a greater pace still."

The 4 new staff in question, who are based in the Simply office in Preston, are:

Jenna Hopkinson - Sales jobs boards
Janet Nowland - SimplyLawJobs
Paul McKenna - Marketing jobs boards
Elizabeth Brett - Corporate Sales (across all Simply sites)

Lisa Johnson (currently selling SimplyLawJobs) will shortly be moving across to the Sales boards.

Friday-Ad's own Karate Kid

Congratulations to Darren Stringer from our accounts department here in Sayers, who recently competed in an international Karate competition in Russia and came third in his category.

Darren competed in the IFK International Yamburg Cup in the lightweight division and says: "I had 4 fights in total, I lost in the semi finals on boards (the other guy broke more boards than me so advanced after 2 rounds).

"Then I had to fight off for 3rd and 4th place. I won the fight and came 3rd, and won a gold bar to go with the trophy.

"12 different countries entered the competition and there was around 20 entrants in the lightweight category".

Judging by Darren's impressive victory perhaps a switch of roles to 'debt collecting' would be right up his street?!

"If I would have been the recipient of one of your sales pitches, I'd push your bloody face in the cake"

As a big fan of words and what people say, I was pleased to read a recent article on the MediaGuardian site which lists some of Sir Alan Sugar's best quotes.

You can read the list here, but a few favourites include:

On technology...
I was the first to use faxes, but I would never use Facebook - that's rubbish (2008)

Giving a birthday card to his wife...
Signed: 'From Alan Sugar'

To 'apprentice' Michael, who declared himself jewish, then half-jewish...
If you're unsure, you can always pull your trousers down and we can check (2008)

And whilst we're on the subject of Sir Alan, The Apprentice is hotting up with tonight's show at 9pm the penultimate one of the series. With only five candidates left, this show is the one that people dread the most - the interviews.

I think the five remaining are closely matched this year, but my money's on Claire (watch this space to see if I'm right).

It's a perfect topical opportunity to show people that directory business is moving online and that a site such as Brownbook.net offers so many advantages over printed and other online directories.
